GOP Sen. Cory Gardner stayed mum on meatpacking coronavirus outbreaks as he received industry donations

Some of the biggest and most deadly COVID-19 outbreaks in the U.S. stemmed from the meatpacking industry. But Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) was reluctant to call for accountability, including when it came to a Colorado-based plant Gardner received donations from, Business Insider reports.Early in the pandemic, meatpacking factories' close quarters became home to massive COVID-19 outbreaks throughout the country. An outbreak at the JBS meatpacking plant in Greeley, Colorado led to at least 291 confirmed cases and six deaths — the biggest localized outbreak in the state. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) explicitly called for an investigation at the facility, as did a JBS employee union, which called out Gardner for failing to provide promised coronavirus tests for workers. But Gardner wouldn't discuss the situation with Business Insider, and similarly avoided questions about JBS in a local radio interview.Throughout his Senate career, Gardner has been one of the top recipients of donations from JBS; He has received $24,000 from the company over the years. This election cycle, he received the second most money from JBS of any senator, as well as the second largest contribution total from the meatpacking industry as a whole. Gardner is considered one of the most vulnerable senators this fall as he faces former Gov. Seoul: North Korea kills S. Korean official, burns his body

South Korea said Thursday that North Korean troops fatally shot a South Korean government official who may have attempted to defect and set his body on fire after finding him on a floating object near the countries' disputed sea boundary. According to Seoul, the man disappeared from a government ship that was checking on possible unauthorized fishing in an area south of the boundary on Monday, a day before he was found in North Korean waters. Later in the day, a North Korean navy boat came and opened fire at him, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said.

Sweden shifts on no-lockdown strategy

Sweden's state epidemiologist has said that he is now willing to recommend lockdown measures such as school closures, and strict limits to the size of gatherings - so long as they are only imposed locally and for three weeks at a time. The Public Health Agency of Sweden's new approach to local restrictions, floated first at a press conference on Tuesday, marks its biggest strategic shift since it launched its no-lockdown strategy in March. "We are thinking of fairly short restrictions, to break the spread of infection requires perhaps two to three weeks at most," Anders Tegnell told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper in an interview published on Wednesday afternoon. "We are still developing the concept, so to say, but something like that." The country's new strategy comes after its infection level fell from being far-and-away the highest of any European Union country in mid-May to being one of the lowest in Europe today. The agency now hopes to keep rates low by rapidly tackling local outbreaks as they occur. "The restrictions could be extremely local. It could be about a single workplace or city district: wherever you see a spread and think that there are restrictions that might stop it," Dr Tegnell told the newspaper.

FBI Director Wray says there's no evidence of national voter fraud after Trump baselessly suggests a ballot 'scam'

FBI Director Christopher Wray has affirmed there's no proof of a national attempt to defraud the 2020 election.On Wednesday, President Trump refused to say whether he would peacefully give up power if Democratic nominee Joe Biden is elected this fall, once again repeating baseless allegations that Democrats are running a "scam." But in sworn testimony before Congress on Thursday, Wray said he's seen no evidence of this happening.While Wray takes "voter fraud and voter suppression ... seriously" and is committed to investigating those situations, "We have not seen, historically, any kind of coordinated national voter fraud effort in a major election, whether it's by mail or otherwise," Wray said when questioned by Sen. President Trump followed up his refusal Wednesday to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses in November with a prediction election experts found equally ominous. "I think this will end up in the Supreme Court, and I think it's very important that we have nine justices," Trump told reporters in the White House. "I think it's better if you go before the election, because I think this scam that the Democrats are pulling — it's a scam — this scam will be before the United States Supreme Court, and I think having a 4-4 situation is not a good situation."Presumably the "scam" he's referring to is the expansion of mail-in ballots, a voting system he and his aides use and his campaign is encouraging his supporters to avail themselves of this year. Trump has been baselessly warning of mail-in vote fraud for months now, but he and his allies are also fighting hard in court, U.C. Irvine election law expert Richard Hasen writes at Slate, calling the situation "a five-alarm fire" and pointing to Barton Gellman's look at worst-case scenarios in The Atlantic.The Trump team's litigation strategy "has become clear," Hasan writes: "Try to block the expansion of mail-in balloting whenever possible and, in a few key states, create enough chaos in the system and legal and political uncertainty in the results that the Supreme Court, Congress, or Republican legislatures can throw the election to Trump if the outcome is at all close or in doubt. It's a Hail Mary, but in a close enough election, we cannot count the possibility out. I've never been more worried about American democracy than I am right now."Trump "keeps saying that he is counting on the courts, the federal courts, to help him win," and that "he's not going to wait for the ballots to be counted," MSNBC's Chris Hayes pointed out Wednesday night. He and his allies "are also making this part of their explicit argument to fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat on the Supreme Court. ...
