Controversial Women’s March Leaders Back in DNC’s Good Graces

Controversial Women’s March Leaders Back in DNC’s Good GracesEighteen months after seeming to pull their sponsorship of the Women’s March due to allegations of anti-Semistim among the group’s leadership, it appears the Democratic National Committee has welcomed two of the organization’s controversial former leaders back into the fold. Tamika Mallory, the former co-president of the Women’s March, spoke briefly during Monday’s meeting of the Black Caucus about the importance of securing justice for Breonna Taylor, an EMT who was shot by police as they executed a no-knock warrant at her home in May. In January 2019, Mallory appeared on The View to address criticism and allegations of her team’s leadership of the Women’s March and over the course of that interview refused to denounce Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan—whom she once described on Instagram as the GOAT (greatest of all time)—for his anti-Semitic and homophobic rhetoric.  “I didn’t call him the greatest of all time because of his rhetoric,” Mallory said at the time. “I called him the greatest of all time because of what he’s done in black communities.”She later said she should not be judged, “through the lens of a man.”Inside Trump and Farrakhan’s Strange Ties to ScientologyLess than 24 hours later, the DNC  pulled their sponsorship of the March, one of many sponsors to do so in the wake of the controversy that year. On Tuesday, fellow former Women’s March leader Linda Sarsour, a supporter of Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders with a history of controversial statements about Israel, appeared on the livestream for the DNC’s Muslims and Allies Assembly. Her appearance was immediately seized upon by Republicans and the Trump campaign, which circulated a clip where she said the Democratic Party “is absolutely our party.” Both women, along with a third leader, Bob Bland, stepped down from the Women’s March last September as the group tried to move past the controversy. "The caucus and council chairs come up with their own programming and select their own  speakers," a Democratic official said. Neither Sarsour nor Mallory could be immediately reached for comment. Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast hereGet our top stories in your inbox every day. Bipartisan Senate report finds Paul Manafort posed 'grave counterintelligence threat' while on Trump campaign

Bipartisan Senate report finds Paul Manafort posed 'grave counterintelligence threat' while on Trump campaignThe Senate Intelligence Committee released the fifth and final volume of its report on Russian interference in the 2016 election, and its findings don't look great for the former chair of the Trump campaign, Paul Manafort, who has since been convicted of unrelated fraud and tax charges. The bipartisan report mostly agreed with former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's conclusion that the Trump campaign embraced some of the results of Russian intelligence interference and info leaked by WikiLeaks that damaged the Clinton campaign, but found "absolutely no evidence" of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. The committee did, however, hint at the possibility that Manafort at least was aware of Moscow's goal. Manafort, who Axios notes began working on influence operations for Russian and pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarchs in 2004, worked closely with a Russian national named Konstantin Kilimnik, whom the committee described definitively as a Russian intelligence officer. Manafort apparently tried to pass sensitive internal polling data and campaign strategy to Kilimnik while he was chairing the campaign, but the committee wasn't able to determine why or what Kilimnik did with the information. However, the report did say the committee obtained "some information" Kilimnik was connected to Russia's hacking and leaking of Democratic emails.> VP nominee Kamala Harris, a member of the Intelligence Committee, is heard from here, along with Feinstein, Heinrich, Bennet and Wyden, not mincing words. They say committee Manafort's actions in '16 are "what collusion looks likes." pic.twitter.com/jEucRDtlq0> > — Dan Friedman (@dfriedman33) August 18, 2020Ultimately, there was nothing definitively linking Manafort to the interference, but regardless the report still concluded his "high level access and willingness to share information with individuals closely affiliated with the Russian intelligence services ... represented a grave counterintelligence threat." Rise in Shootings Continues in Chicago, NYC, Other Cities

Rise in Shootings Continues in Chicago, NYC, Other CitiesThe surge in violence that has emerged this summer in major American cities continued over the weekend, with at least 64 shooting victims in Chicago and 52 in New York City since Thursday.Five men were killed in the violence in Chicago, while injured victims included teenagers and one 12-year-old boy. In New York, seven of the weekend's 52 victims died, including an off-duty corrections officer who was shot with his own department-issued weapon. Witnesses told a local ABC affiliate that that shooting was likely planned, with three cars pulling up to encircle the victim.President Trump on Sunday threatened to lead a federal response to violence in New York."Law and Order," Trump wrote on Twitter. "If NYC Mayor [Bill de Blasio] can't do it, we will!"Shootings also occurred at a block party in Philadelphia attended by around 300 people; responding officers came under fire but were not injured. In Cincinnati, Ohio, 18 people were shot on Sunday morning in four separate incidents.Shootings generally rise in major cities during the summer months, however 2020 has seen a more dramatic increase in shootings across the country relative to previous years. Homicides in Chicago have risen about 54 percent compared with 2019, while homicides in New York rose 24 percent. Criminologists point to a number of factors to explain the rise, including the effects of coronavirus lockdowns on city social structures as well as the anti-police sentiment that has taken hold following the George Floyd protests."I was surprised at the consistency of the increase across all of the different cities," Jens Ludwig, director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month. However, Ludwig also noted that "Everything that society does that might shape public safety was turned upside-down during the pandemic."
