Democrat Biden says he would kill Keystone XL pipeline
Joe Biden’s campaign said on Monday that if elected president, the presumptive Democratic nominee would rescind the permit for Keystone XL pipeline, which effectively would doom the long-troubled project. In doing so, Biden would reverse actions taken by President Donald Trump, who in 2017 cleared the way for the $8 billion oil sands pipeline to built across the U.S.-Canada border. Trump, a Republican, had made building the pipeline a central promise of his presidential campaign.

Sweden has Europe's highest number of coronavirus deaths per capita over last 7 days
Data compiled by Our World in Data shows Sweden had the highest number of coronavirus deaths per capita in Europe over the last seven days, Reuters reports, calling the country's more relaxed pandemic strategy into question.Sweden, where COVID-19 deaths are declining overall, opted to rely mostly on voluntary social distancing and hygiene measures during the global health crisis, keeping most restaurants, schools, and businesses open. It's unclear how much that choice contributed to Sweden's deaths per capita, which averaged 6.25 per million inhabitants between May 12 and May 19, but it's possible the policy has played a significant role. That said, Sweden has fewer deaths per capita during the full length of the pandemic than its fellow European countries like the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and France, which instituted stricter lockdowns, though there's an argument that Sweden is better suited for a more relaxed lockdown because of its demographics. Meanwhile, Sweden's neighbors Denmark, Norway, and Finland, all of whom implemented more intense measures, have had far fewer deaths per capita. China protests at support of U.S. and others for Taiwan at WHO
The Chinese envoy to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday denounced the support shown by the United States and others to Taiwan during its annual ministerial assembly and said that was undermining the global response to the pandemic. Taiwan lobbied hard to be included as an observer at the two-day virtual meeting and received strong support from the United States, Japan and others, but says it was not invited due to opposition from China. "There are still a few countries determined to plead for Taiwan authorities, seriously violating relevant U.N. and WHO resolutions and undermining global anti-epidemic efforts," Chen Xu, the Chinese ambassador, told the virtual assembly.

UK tells EU it will take 'any measures necessary' to protect fishing waters
British negotiators have told the European Union that the Royal Navy could board EU fishing boats if they breach the terms of a post-Brexit fishing deal. UK officials have said Britain will take any measures necessary to protect its fishing waters, negotiating documents published by the Government revealed on Tuesday. Britain has demanded that EU boats, which currently have the automatic right to fish in UK waters, apply for a licence and that the bloc provides the UK with a list of all vessels eligible to enter British fisheries "in good time". "Access to our waters will be on our terms," Michael Gove said in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

Missouri carries out 1st US execution since pandemic began
A Missouri man was put to death by lethal injection Tuesday for fatally stabbing an 81-year-old woman nearly three decades ago, the first U.S. execution since the coronavirus pandemic took hold. Walter Barton, 64, had long maintained he was innocent of killing Gladys Kuehler, and his case was tied up for years due to appeals, mistrials and two overturned convictions.
