Trump’s Global Entry Ban Aims to Punish New York, Democrats Say

(Bloomberg) -- House Democrats said the Trump administration’s ban on New York State residents participating in U.S. travel pre-screening programs is a “senseless, retaliatory decision” that must be reversed.“Your justification for this sudden policy shift appears to be no more than a pretext,” the Democrats, including Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, wrote in a letter to acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf that was released on Saturday.The move change “may be an improper attempt to use official DHS policy to punish the people of New York” for a disagreement with the Trump administration, the lawmakers said in the letter, also signed by Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney of New York.The comments follow Thursday’s blocking by federal authorities of New York State residents from joining programs that travelers use to quickly move through airport security and customs. The administration cited new limits on federal access to state driver’s license data aimed at protecting undocumented immigrants. The department will no longer let New York residents sign up for or renew enrollments in Trusted Traveler programs such as Global Entry.New York’s legislation restricting Customs and Border Protection access to the records “makes us less safe and shields criminals,” CBP Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan said in a statement announcing the change.Democratic Representatives Kathleen Rice, Yvette Clarke, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York also signed the letter, which was dated Friday.Wolf, who assumed his role in November, will comment further on the policy changes and challenges during his scheduled appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News Channel.New York residents enrolled in the Global Entry program can continue using their passes until they expire, but between 150,000 and 200,000 people per year will be unable to renew their participation.New York State Attorney General Letitia James said Friday she’ll sue to block the ban. “This is political retribution, plain and simple,” James, a Democrat and Trump critic who’d previously sued the administration over immigration policy including the so-called Muslim travel ban, said in a statement.Global Entry gives those arriving in the U.S. expedited passage through customs for five years following a background check and interview with DHS. It’s also linked to the department’s “TSA Pre-Check” program, giving most Global Entry members expedited passage through airport security.“We recognize that many New York residents and businesses will be negatively affected by this change, but we cannot compromise the safety and security of our homeland,” Morgan said in the statement. “When states take negative measures that hinder our ability to protect our great country, we must respond.”President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that Andrew Cuomo, the New York governor, had canceled a meeting on the topic. “Governor Cuomo wanted to see me this weekend,” Trump tweeted. “He just canceled. Virginia Democrats advance assault weapon ban

Democratic lawmakers in Virginia are advancing legislation to ban the sale of assault weapons and the possession of high-capacity magazines despite fierce opposition from gun owners. A state House committee on Friday advanced legislation backed by Gov. Ralph Northam to ban the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms, including popular AR-15 style rifles, and silencers and prohibit the possession of magazines that hold more than 12 rounds. It's the most ambitious measure proposed by Northam and one that's met the most pushback, including from members of his own party.

Michael Bloomberg surges to 2nd place in the betting markets

Americans may not be betting on Michael Bloomberg yet, but betting markets still think he's got a chance.The former New York City mayor has totally leapfrogged former Vice President Joe Biden in an average of betting markets, RealClearPolitics' average shows. Bloomberg has a 19 percent chance of winning, per ElectionBettingOdds.com, while PredictIt's betting market gives Bloomberg a 23-cent "yes" price to Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) 43 cents.Bloomberg's rise coincides with a major drop in Biden's betting chances, likely stemming from the former vice president's dismal performance in Monday's Iowa caucuses. Even former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has come close to surpassing Biden in RealClearPolitics' average, and he did so decisively on PredictIt. Still, ElectionBettingOdds.com has President Trump with the best chance of winning the whole election this fall, giving him a 59.5 percent chance to Sanders' 14.8 percent and Bloomberg's 10 percent.The Biden drop was also good news for Sanders. He surpassed Biden on the betting markets in late January, and is now far and away the top candidate to win the Democratic nomination. In another Trump win, court tosses Democrats' suit over his businesses

A federal appeals court on Friday threw out a lawsuit brought by Democratic lawmakers that accused Donald Trump of violating anti-corruption provisions in the U.S. Constitution with his business dealings, capping a week of political victories for the Republican president. A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the more than 210 House of Representatives and Senate Democrats lacked the required legal standing to bring the case, reversing a lower court judge's decision that had allowed the case to proceed. Two days after being acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial, Trump hailed the ruling as a "total win," telling reporters that "it was another phony case." Elizabeth Wydra, a lawyer for the lawmakers, said they were disappointed in the decision and were weighing their next steps.

It might come down to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg once again.In its latest poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, CNN shows Sanders leading the pack in the Granite State ahead of Tuesday's primary. The senator picked up 28 percent support in the survey, leading his closest contender Buttigieg by seven points. The two went toe to toe in the hotly contested — and mildly controversial — Iowa caucuses last week, with Buttigieg reeling in more delegates while Sanders led in terms of raw votes. New Hampshire, it seems, could provide another close race between the two, especially considering Iowa polls showed Sanders leading Buttigieg by a similar amount in the lead up to the caucuses.The CNN poll wasn't much to look at for anyone else. Former Vice President Joe Biden likely won't be surprised to hear he came in third with 11 percent, while no one else hit double digits. Sen. President Trump said Friday that Congress should expunge his impeachment from the congressional record since it was a "political hoax."“That's a very good question," Trump said when asked whether Congress should wipe the record clean. "Should they expunge the impeachment in the House? They should because it was a hoax. It was a total political hoax.”The Senate acquitted Trump on Wednesday of the two impeachment charges against him, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The president had blasted the impeachment process for months as politically motivated by Democrats to remove a duly elected president they oppose.House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy floated the possibility earlier this week, saying he would attempt to expunge Trump's impeachment from the House record should the GOP retake the majority in the lower chamber and elect him speaker.“This is the fastest, weakest, most political impeachment in history," McCarthy said. "I don’t think it should stay on the books."Other Republicans have backed the idea of expunging the record as well.Representative Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, said holding a vote on a resolution that would seek to expunge the impeachment would "send a loud message that this was a political, partisan effort."House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed the possibility of expungement later on Friday, adding a promise that Republicans would not take back the majority in the House this year.“They can’t do that,” Pelosi said. “First of all they’re not getting the chamber back, but apart from that, there’s no expunging. If they don’t want to honor their oath of office, then they’re going to expunge from their own souls the violation of the Constitution that they made.”
